Green cars are the order of the day for Scottish ministers after Labour urged chiefs to hand over £15million for a fleet of new eco-friendly council vehicles.
Scottish leader Iain Gray believes that the cash should be matched by councils in a bid to cut pollution.
Currently, only 23 of the 20,000 plus council vehicles in the country are electric or hybrid. According to Mr Gray, pumping around £30million into the system would allow them to buy around 2,000 more.
Labour also wants ministers to switch to electric cars and the UK government will offer £3million for hybrid buses as well as a £30million fund for councils.
According to a Scottish Government spokesman, they are considering converting all public sector vehicles to low carbon technologies by 2020.
