With a clear focus on the development of new materials for high performance automotive traction batteries, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has awarded €20million to a consortium of 10 universities and non-university research institutions.
The Consortium South of the Initiative of Electrochemistry for Electromobility consists of the Universität Karlsruhe; Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg; Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen; the Technical University of Darmstadt; the University of Ulm; IFW Dresden; the Max Planck Institute for Solid-State Research, Stuttgart; the German Aerospace Centre, Stuttgart; and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research of Baden-Württemberg, Ulm.
The efforts to strengthen electrochemistry research reflect the perceived potential of electromobility in Germany as the country bids to enhance its strengths.
The focus will be placed on developing new battery materials to produce cells with increased energy and power density. It is believed that cycle life, reliability, quick charge and discharge will be focused on.
