There are a vast number of upstart car companies emerging on the West Coast of the USA at the moment, but Coda Automotive is determined to establish itself as more than just one of the pack.
The company has completed an agreement with UQM Technologies which will see the latter supply its UQM PowerPhase 100 electric propulsion systems to the electric car company for a period of 10 years.
Under the terms of the agreement, initial shipments will begin later this calendar year and will ramp up prior to the delivery of Coda’s four-door, five-passenger, all electric saloon car in the Californian market by mid 2010. A total of 20,000 propulsion systems have been purchased over the initial two year period.
The propulsion system delivers 100kW of peak power and 300Nm of peak torque, as well as peak system efficiency of 94 per cent. The Coda saloon car meanwhile, uses a 33.8kWh lithium-ion battery, with a real world range of 90-120miles depending on individual driving habits. It also includes an on-board charger that can charge for a 40mile commute in approximately two hours.
The electric saloon car from Coda meanwhile, is also stepping forward. It will be fully built and tested on a large scale assembly line operated by Coda’s manufacturing and assembly partner HaFei Automobile Industry Group Co Ltd.
