Nissan previews electric vehicle platform

Ever wondered what shape the electric cars from Nissan will take? Then look no further than the electric vehicle platform on a Tilda-based prototype which was unveiled by the Japanese car manufacturer yesterday.

The dedicated electric vehicle platform includes a high rigid body, compact lithium-ion battery with high power output and energy capacity, and a high performance motor. The motor delivers 80kW/280Nm for high response and powerful acceleration.

The platform also features a 24kWh laminated compact lithium-ion battery pack that comes from Nissan joint venture AESC and is placed under the vehicle floor for efficient packing. The battery layout also incorporates smooth under-floor air-flow to help reduce drag. According to estimates, the regenerative braking extends the driving range by more than 99 miles.

In addition, Nissan has developed a sophisticated IT system for its zero emission electric vehicles that connects the on-board transmitting unit to a global data centre. This offers information on the maximum range, the nearest charging stations, allows for timer settings of air conditioning and battery charging, and has an electric vehicle remote control and monitoring function so the driver can monitor the state of charge of the electric vehicle on a website or via a mobile phone.

The all electric vehicle is slated for launch in the US in 2010 with Japanese and European launches to follow.
