There was more joy for car manufacturers in July thanks to the UK’s car scrappage scheme.
Since the beginning of the scheme, 84,361 vehicles have been registered according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) with the scrappage scheme accounting for 21 per cent of July’s new car registrations, totalling 33,026 units.
This fraction of the 157,149 new car registrations total for the month gave the industry a much needed boost. In the commercial vehicle sector meanwhile, 499 vans were registered under the scheme, meaning it accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total scrappage registrations and 3.6 per cent of overall van registrations in July.
Paul Everitt, the SMMT’s chief executive, is thrilled with the results and particularly the environmental benefits.
“The scrappage scheme has contributed to the first increase in new car registrations since April last year,” he said.
“Smaller, lower-CO2 emitting cars are taking the lion’s share of registrations which will have a positive impact in reducing emissions as well as boosting the UK motor industry.”
