Closer look at smart charging

Another day passes at the Plug-in 2009 conference in Long Beach, with another glimpse of how we may be driving the vehicles of the future.

GrindPoint Inc and Coulomb Technologies joined forces to demonstrate smart grid enabled smart charging stations for electric vehicles. Their solution uses Coulomb’s ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations and GridPoint’s smart charging software in a bid to extend how utilities and municipalities manage vehicle charging load.

The impressive infrastructure solution can adapt to critical grid events and prioritise the need to provide fuel for electric vehicles. When demand peaks, or during critical events, utilities are then able to use public charging infrastructure to manage the electricity load.

The system will allow demand response events to be dispatched system wide or targeted to specific locations. It’s another exciting example that we’re taking a step closer to a very different world of motoring.
