Motorists in Nottingham could face fine up £300 for leaving their car engines running.
According to the Daily Express, new measures to cut down on anti-social behaviour could see residents in the county fined anything from £50 to £300 for offences ranging from putting up ‘missing cat’ posters to smoking in no-smoking zones to leaving a car engine running to warm up.
The Labour-run city council said the new penalties were in response to public opinion.
Richard Antcliff, chief anti- social behaviour officer told the paper: “When we survey people, the things that trouble them most are not ¬robbery, burglary and other crimes, but the low-level, anti-social rubbish and grime stuff. This will allow us to tackle day-to-day annoyances.”
However critics of the measure have accussed the council of attempting to raise revenues.
One Nottingham resident said: “This has a very totalitarian feel to it…. “If it is a crime to sit in a car with the engine running then this country really has gone mad,” adding, “Whatever will they find to fine us for next? Looking at people in a strange way? Walking on the cracks in pavements? Wearing a loud shirt in a built-up area? This is a blatant attempt by the council to raise revenue.”
