As the Copenhagen summit on climate change draws ever closer, hope is high that a deal can be struck.
Speaking from the Copenhagen editors’ forum, UK economist Lord Nicholas Stern said that though there is a long way to go, it was important not to be defeatist and that there is hope an ambitious deal can be reached.
He said that though there are many difficulties, “we should recognise the strong progress that has been made over these last few weeks”. He said that there is a “good chance of getting a serious deal in Copenhagen”.
Representatives from publications from around the world gathered in Copenhagen from October 9-11 as part of Project Syndicate’s ‘Kyoto to Copenhagen’, a conference featuring discussions and interviews.
World leaders are scheduled to meet in Copenhagen in December when they will discuss how to move forward on climate change when the Kyoto Accords expire in 2012.
