Volkswagen has released a new engine as it looks to reduce fuel consumption and slash emissions.
The new 1.2l TSI engine, which was introduced earlier this year at the 30th Vienna Engine Symposium in May, is now available in the VW Golf, VW Golf Plus and the VW Polo.
This four-cylinder, turbocharged 77kW TSI engine has a maximum torque of 175Nm at a low speed of 1,500rpm and uses friction optimisation and lightweight construction to continue its development. It is based on an aluminium crankcase and its completely retuned direct injection allows for smooth power development as well as low consumption and low emissions.
When used with the fifth-generation Polo, it consumes 43mpg and has CO2 emissions of 129g/km. This is significantly less than the retired 1.6litre engine that was featured on the previous model and represents a 30g/km reduction in CO2.
