There was good news for Volkswagen of America as it reported its October 2009 sales.
The company sold 17,037 units during the month – that’s a 7.2 per cent increase over the same month in the previous year. The sales were lead by the VW Jetta, which is consistently VW’s top selling model in the USA, and posted a 25 per cent increase over its sales the previous year at 9,076 units.
Indeed the company made a significant breakthrough with its diesel models. Jetta TDI sales accounted for 40 per cent of total Jetta saloon and SportWagon sales, while sales of all TDI models accounted for 24 per cent of total October sales. The Jetta Sedan (saloon) TDI sold 1,839 units, 26 per cent of total sales; the Jetta SportWagon sold 1,819 units, 90 per cent of SportWagon sales; the Touareg TDI sold 234 units, 45 per cent of Touareg sales; and the Golf TDI sold 116 units – that’s 19 per cent of the total sales of the Golf/Rabbit model in the country.
Commenting on the results, Mark Barnes, the chief operating officer of Volkswagen America said the company was “extremely pleased”. He highlighted the success of the clean diesel TDI models as gaining momentum in the marketplace and described the Golf and Touareg TDIs as “welcome additions” to the model line-up.
