Electric cars are progressing really quickly now and in my opinion they'll be rivalling petrol and diesel cars shortly.

In this age of sensors, one fitted to a car that reacts to (close)moving objects or objects in the way that will activate a sound and/or brakes isn't too difficult to envisage.
Uniformity on the nature of the sound so pedestrians recognise it for what is represents will prove the most difficult part.
To beep or not to beep THAT is the question.

They have been looking at this issue for a while in Japan and the USA, specifically in connection with the visually impaired, but as electric cars become more prevailent it is an issue for all pedestrians as we rely as much on hearing cars as seeing them.

It's quite ironic given that manufacturers have spent years trying to make cars as noiseless as possible. Basically they are trying to think how they can bring back some noise.

Some engineers working on the Nissan Leaf specifically (http://www.electriccarsite.co.uk/nissan-leaf-electric-car#comment-31363) have recently been presenting some ideas for artificial noises, chimes, a melody, a vroooom.

It will be interesting to see what they come up......
