One in 10 new cars sold is… a Toyota Prius

Success doesn’t come much more resounding than this – one out of every 10 new cars sold in Japan during November was a Toyota Prius.

The vehicle maintained its top spot in Japan new passenger car sales for the seventh month in a row, posting 26,815 units according to data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. Total passenger car sales for the month were 268,450.

The Prius isn’t the only hybrid model enjoying success in Japan where the technology benefits from tax breaks and subsidies offered toward the purchase of fuel efficient models. According to the Nikkei, Honda’s Insight Hybrid came in fifth in the overall rankings for the month with 9,413 units sold – combined with the Prius, the two hybrids accounted for 13.5 per cent of new vehicle sales for the month.

It seems that the success story is only going to continue, with Toyota’s new SAI Hybrid, which goes on sale this Monday, already having drawn pre-orders for 14,000 units.
