Green car rally heads to Copenhagen

A convoy of green cars set off from London yesterday to head to Copenhagen in a bid to demonstrate alternatives to flying.

Green rally expert, Revolve Global organised this historic trip in co-operation with Honda and its Insight model, Revolve Technologies and its modified Ford Transit which runs on hydrogen and Organic Power which runs a converted Mercedes EcoSprinter on bio-methane to create a mini Eco-Rally of green vehicles to head to the historic Climate Change Summit currently taking place in the Danish capital. They arrived at late last night in Copenhagen tired but pleased to be there.

Although with the infrastructure for re-fuelling some of the technologies used in the race is still being embryonic, Revolve and co completed the trip without a hitch.

Top green author Tracey Smith- “The Book of Rubbish Ideas” published by Alastair Sawdays as part of the Fragile Earth series- was along for the ride and helped all passengers put things into a context of sustainability. Timed to coincide with COP15 climate change summit, the rally forms part of a documentary – proving that travelling to Copenhagen in an environmentally friendly manner is possible.

Revolve started the organising eco-rallies in 2007. The first one was opened by HRH Prince Charles; this year they were welcomed to London from Mayor, Boris Johnston and saw a bevy of green cars travel from Brighton to London. This longer trip has not only to highlighted the irony that many of those attending the summit flew to Copenhagen but that it is possible and practicable to drive sustainably fuelled vehicles- options are here: now.

The mini rally has been a demonstration of sustainable transport in action; transport accounts for 47 per cent of an individual’s carbon emissions. It sends the message to the world that automotive companies through to innovative SME’s are taking action against climate change in many ways.

Eco-rally regulars Quentin Wilson, Robert Llewellyn and Joanna Yarrow have supported the event.

What a crazy few days it has been! Copenhagen has been gripped by eco-fever and I have a hot report to pen…more soon. TS
