Peugeot outlines green car strategy

With the aim of climbing three places in the world car market by 2015 – it is currently in 10th place – Peugeot has outlined a comprehensive new marquee plan that places a clear emphasis on green cars.

The French manufacturer will turn to a new products strategy that includes electric propulsion in the form of the i0n electric car and E-Vivacity scooter; the diesel hybrid 3008; the e-HDi micro-hybrid from 2011 on the entire diesel range; and a plug-in diesel hybrid in 2012.

The main focal points of its product strategy are:

-         Cleaner engines: The company hopes to improve engine efficiency with a downsizing strategy for both its petrol and HDi FAP diesel engines.
-         Electric vehicles: Peugeot will launch the i0n in Europe from the end of 2010 which has a top speed of 81mph, a range of 130km and can be fully recharged in six hours using a household electric socket or in 30minutes with a rapid charging terminal. Peugeot will also offer a 100 per cent electric light commercial vehicle based on the Partner Origin from the spring.

-         Micro-hybrids: The e-HDi system will be introduced from the end of 2011 – it cuts both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 15 per cent.

-         Full hybrid: The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 is expected to be launched in spring next year. It uses a parallel architecture that combines a diesel engine, electric motor, six-speed electronically controlled manual gearbox and a stop-start system. It will offer fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 62mpg and 99g/km respectively.

-         Hybrid4 Plug-in: From 2012, Peugeot will introduce plug-in Hybrid4 technology with the aim of taking fuel economy to around 118mpg and cutting CO2 emissions below 50g/km of CO2.

Its environmental strategy will also expand to its two- and three- wheeled vehicles with Peugeot back in the cycle market thanks to an exclusive worldwide partnership with Cycleurope.

The company is also introducing the Peugeot SR1, which uses Hybrid4 technology to offer emissions of 119g/km, four-wheel drive and steering with fuel consumption of 48mpg. It will be unveiled to the general public at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
