It is one of the most strategically important vehicles to be unveiled by Ford in years – and now the next-generation Ford Focus has finally been showcased at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.
The new Focus will be one of 10 unique models to be built on Ford’s C-car platform, which the company hopes will generate total sales in the region of two million units annually by 2012 – doubling its 2008 C-car volumes. The Focus itself features a completely new 2.0litre petrol engine with direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing that enhances both performance and fuel economy. The new engine can deliver 155hp and 145lb-ft of torque, meaning it is 20 per cent more powerful than the current 2.0 Duratec I-4 unit.
The global powertrain line-up will also include a range of Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder turbocharged direct injection engines, including a 1.6litre unit with fuel consumption savings of 10-20 per cent compared to outgoing models.

The vehicle’s performance is boosted by a new Powershift six speed automatic transmission. This is a dual dry clutch transmission that uses sealed internal lubrication to reduce friction and contribute to the overall fuel efficiency thanks to the lack of pumps and hoses which save weight. Twin internal clutches keep it in a constant mesh while optimising it for maximum responsiveness and fuel efficiency depending on the speed travelled.
The new Focus will be sold in 122 countries worldwide with production for Europe and North America to start later this year with market launch in early 2011. Asia, Africa and South America production will follow.
Meanwhile, plans have also been confirmed for a battery electric version of the Ford Focus – the company hopes to introduce an electric Focus in 2011.
