Fans of two-wheeled transport can rejoice in the nation’s capital after Transport for London announced the creation of 12 biking boroughs in a bid to encourage a greater number of cyclists in the area.
According to research, more than half of the trips in the capital that could be made by bicycle are in Outer London – that’s a total of 2.4million journeys a day, the majority of which are currently made by car. So it is hoped that the creation of the 12 biking boroughs, with support from Transport for London, will identify how cycling in each area can be developed.
The boroughs will develop plans that could include measures such as working with the NHS, Primary Care Trusts, local businesses and schools to promote cycling while also installing more secure cycle parking spaces and improving junction layouts to make them safer for cyclists.
The 12 boroughs that will each benefit from £25,000 to fund a local study examining how cycling can be increased are: Barking & Dagenham; Bexley; Brent; Bromley; Croydon; Ealing; Haringey; Havering; Hillingdon; Kingston; Merton; and Redbridge.
