In the case of the four direct injection turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines, the incoming models will be as much as 21 per cent more fuel efficient than the outgoing models. Furthermore, the engines do not sacrifice performance as the TSIs deliver 148hp and 197hp, while the TDIs develop 138hp and 168hp.

Among the green features of these exciting new models is a stop-start system with energy recuperation. It has average fuel consumption of 44.4mpg, the equivalent of 145g/km of CO2. According to Volkswagen, the Sharan 2.0 sets a benchmark for efficiency in its segment while also boasting a top speed of 119mph.

In addition the TDI models come fitted with an SCR catalytic converter for after-treatment of nitrogen oxides. All of the Euro 5 engines are available with a direct shift gearbox, which is also available as standard with the 200 PS TSI.
