Ford’s ageless Fiesta model will soon benefit from the introduction of a new PowerShift dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission.
The transmission is based on efficient technology and eliminates the added weight and complexity of a torque converter, as well as the fluid pumps and planetary gears that are normally used in automatics. The transmission will also be electronically controlled with twin internal clutches that can move gears quickly and smoothly.
Built at a new facility in Irapuato, Mexico, it is produced by GETRAG Americas, a joint venture between GETRAG Group and GETRAG FORD Transmissions. The plant will also supply PowerShift units for the new Ford Focus and has been set up to specifically address the transmission needs of North America.
With the new transmission in place, the Fiesta will become the second new Ford car to deliver better fuel economy using an automatic transmission rather than a manual transmission – the six-speed automatic 2011 Mustang Coupe betters the standard six-speed manual by two miles per gallon. This advanced technology now provides customers with the convenience of an automatic transmission without sacrificing efficiency.
Ford has committed to six-speed transmissions and plans to have them available on 85 per cent of its nameplates by 2010 and 100 per cent by 2013.
