News in brief: SAIC reveals a Leaf of its own

Anything Nissan can do, Chinese manufacturer SAIC can apparently do too… or at least with the same name.

The company revealed its own Leaf concept car as part of the Shanghai Automotive Group General Motors Pavilion at Expo 2010.

The SAIC Leaf.

The SAIC Leaf.

Unlike the LEAF from Nissan however, this is not a conventional electric car. Instead, it features photovoltaic conversion, wind energy conversion and CO2 absorption. Solar cells are incorporated into the roof and they can track the position of the sun to improve efficiency; each of the four wheels acts as a mini wind turbine to turn wind energy into electrical energy; and the body includes meal organic framework elements for CO2 capture and a microbial fuel cell that helps generate a current.
