Transport for London to pour £67million into green vehicles

A £67million four-year international tender has been issued by Transport for London (TfL) for up to 1,300 electric or low carbon vehicles.

The company is hoping to award a framework agreement for the supply and maintenance of EC whole vehicle type approved vehicles and the tender will be divided into five lots. It is expected that around 70 per cent of the vehicles purchased must meet European Vehicle Category M1, meaning they are four-wheel light duty vehicles, and they must have a maximum CO2 output of 75g/km. The remaining 30 per cent of the vehicles will be divided among the other four lots.

Here is a breakdown of the five vehicle lots involved:

- European Vehicle Category M1: As above, four-wheel vehicles that do not have more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat and have maximum CO2 emissions of 75g/km.

- European Vehicle Category M2: Refers to vehicles comprising more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat and that do not exceed five tonnes. Their maximum CO2 emissions must be 125g/km.

- European Vehicle Category L: This includes mopeds, motor tricycles, motorcycles and quadricycles with maximum CO2 emissions of 0g/km.

- European Vehicle Category N1: These are goods carrying vehicles with a maximum mass that does not exceed 3.5tonnes. Their maximum CO2 emissions must not exceed 125g/km.

- European Vehicle Category N2: Vehicles that carry goods and have a maximum mass exceeding 3.5tonnes. CO2 emissions must not exceed 0g/km.

The proposal follows on from the publication of An Electric Vehicle Delivery Plan for London in which Mayor of London Boris Johnson set a target of 1,000 electric vehicles in the fleet for the Greater London area functional bodies by 2015. An additional 300 vehicles are required for other public bodies in and outside the Greater London area.
