US DOE announces huge funding boost for biomass research

The production of advanced biofuels on a large scale has taken a step forward after the US Departments of Energy and Agriculture (DOE and USDA) announced up to $33million in funding for the Biomass Research and Development Initiative.

The initiative looks at the production of advanced biofuels including biobutanol, Fischer-Tropsch fuels and renewable hydrocarbons.

The funding will go towards several projects aimed at increasing the availability of renewable fuels and bio-based products. Any advanced biofuels produced from these projects should reduce greenhouse gases by a minimum of 50 per cent under the terms set out by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The USDA and DOE are now soliciting applications from three technical areas: feedstocks development; biofuels and bio-based products development; and biofuels development analysis. Each project must integrate all three technical areas.
