French manufacturer Renault, featured in our manufacturer spotlight, has revealed plans to extend its Megane line-up with a new six-speed efficient dual clutch automatic transmission.
The new gearbox will be made available with the dCi 110 DPF diesel engine and delivers improved fuel consumption and fewer CO2 emissions by up to 17 per cent compared to the conventional model – that’s a drop of around 30g/km of CO2. This means that the Megane Hatchback, Megane Coupe, Megane Estate and Megane Coupe-Cabriolet, along with the Scenic and Grand Scenic will be the first models of the Renault range to qualify for the Renault eco2 signature even with an automatic transmission.
Dispensing with the need for a clutch pedal, the new EDC gearbox is a genuine automatic transmission with an up/down shift mode. The ideal gear is selected by an electronic control unit with gearshifts available that are both automatic and comfortable.
To optimise efficiency, Renault has selected a dual dry clutch system and gears are matched by means of synchronisers that are operated by electric actuators that are in turn controlled by a control unit.
