Delphi system the key to VW emission cuts

The latest BlueMotion model boasts some seriously impressive emission figures at 87g/km – and much of its success can be attributed to its Multec Diesel Common Rail System.

The system, which is used in the 1.2litre three-cylinder model, boasts the latest evolution in solenoid type diesel common rail injector technology, which includes a DFP6 fuel pump.

It is Delphi’s first diesel common rail programme with on what is the company’s most economical five seat model and the reigning World Car of the Year. However, the system was actually launched in 2000 but has been improved to meet changing emission standards and to drive new powertrain strategies.

The new system provides improved fuel delivery control, enhanced spray atomisation and air mixing and extended multiple injection capability. In fact, the system employed by the Polo BlueMotion can deliver up to six injection events per cycle.

In addition to optimised combustion, the system is improved with reduced component mass, enhanced hydraulic performance and improved energy consumption.
