Volkswagen’s alternatively powered vehicles took a one, two and three finish at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring this weekend.
The bio natural gas powered sports coupes took a podium lockout in the category for alternatively powered vehicles after racing in front of 220,000 spectators.
The 330 hp Scirocco GT24-CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles produce up to 80 per cent less CO2 than their petrol equivalent, the carmaker claims, and are proof that green needn’t mean slow. Winning an excellent 16th place overall, the winning gas powered Scirocco, powered by a two-litre turbo engine completed the fastest race lap for a front-wheel drive car with a time of 9m 04.710s.
Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg of Volkswagen said: “To finish this tough race in the top 20 positions with all three Scirocco is a great success. Mobility with regenerative fuel is winning increasingly on importance and it was the correct decision to compete with Bio Natural Gas as alternative power. In addition, we gave a great show and won the hearts of many people.”
