A new service to help people reduce their travel-related carbon emissions has been launched in Northwest England.
The new service is funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and will be led by the Energy Saving Trust.
Developed especially for the Northwest, the scheme is thought to be the first of its kind and will eventually be rolled out nationally.
Over 100,000 homes in the Northwest who want help to take action will receive a short questionnaire (travel energy check) that assesses where costs could be saved and lead on to a lower carbon lifestyle. Respondents to the campaign will receive a personalised and tailored report that includes local information on what’s available, offers in the local area, tips on smarter vehicle choices and driving, as well as information on other services to help them on their way.
Catherine Monaghan, Head of Energy Saving Trust North West said: “Changing the way you travel is one of the ways in which you can make a big difference to your carbon footprint. Over the last 18 months, we have rapidly expanded our energy efficiency advice services, to include transport and travel as we found those interested in reducing their home energy bills are also keen to improve their fuel efficiency and reduce transport costs. We now provide advice on smarter driving, choosing a car and on sustainable travel, as these complement the traditional home energy advice nicely. So far, the response has been very positive, and most people are very impressed with just how much they can do, without too much effort.
“We’ve also had success at public and employee engagement events throughout the region with our ‘smarter driving simulators’, a new interactive tool that we use to demonstrate how you can save costs, simply by adapting the way in which you drive.”
