It was originally predicted that China’s incentive plan for private purchases of new energy vehicles would be spread nationwide – but now it seems it will be tested first in five cities.
According to a report by Shanghai Securities News, the cities to benefit from the scheme will be Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Wuhan.
It is expected that the incentives will be similar to last year’s pilot project for public sector buyers with private electric car buyers to qualify for incentives of up to 60,000 yuan.
However, Kevin Wale, GM China’s president and chief executive, commented that if the subsidy plan is applied to only a few cities it won’t fully boost new energy vehicle consumption in China. He believes Chinese consumers need time to get familiar with driving new energy vehicles and the construction of charging stations will also take time.
