Ambitious plans to expand the uptake of electric vehicles could see Yorkshire become the home of over 700 electric charging points.
According to the BBC, which today launches its Electric Ride challenge (see story), a bid for up to £20 million could see Yorkshire seriously strengthen its capacity to facilitate the use of electric vehicles.
A consortium including regional development agency, CO2Sense plans to install the charging points primarily in the major Yorkshire cities of Leeds, Sheffield, York and Hull. If successful in its bid, funding from the Plugged in Places scheme will pay for electric car charging points to be installed on streets and in local authorities, business, retail and leisure facility car parks.
The latest round of bids for funding from the Plugged-in Places scheme are set to be assessed by the end of the year, with successful bids expected to be announced in 2011.
