Times Square, New York, was the venue for Volkswagen to present its brand new design for the Jetta.
The new Volkswagen Jetta will be the largest version of the vehicle yet and will no longer share body components with the Golf, instead it will be an independent vehicle type.
In the US and Canada it will come with a choice of three petrol engines and one turbodiesel direct-injection engine – two of the four engines will be new, including an entry level petrol engine – 85kW – and the common trail TDI – 103kW. The new 115 PS engine has a combined fuel economy of 28mpg with a manual transmission, while the automatic transmission version attains a value of 26mpg. Meanwhile, the TDI clean diesel uses a particulate filter and a nitrogen oxide storage catalytic converter to ensure it meets Tier 2 Bin 5 emission requirements – its combined fuel economy is around 34mpg.
Meanwhile, in Europe, the Jetta will come with a choice of six engines with smaller engine displacements available. Four of the six engines are new: 1.2 TSI (77kW); 1.4 TSI (118kW); 1.6 TDI (77kW); 2.0 TDI (103kW).
Each Jetta engine offered in Europe will meet EU-5 emission standards with the 1.2 TSI and 1.6 TDI also available with a BlueMotion technology package that comes with a start-stop system and battery regeneration. The 1.2 TSI BlueMotion has average fuel consumption of 44mpg while the Jetta 1.6 TDI BlueMotion attains fuel consumption of 57mpg.
