Mitsubishi is considering building a new plant to produce electric car models in Spain, according to news agency, AFP.
The Spanish government is reported to have said on Thursday that it is in negotiations with the Japanese carmaker over plans to construct a new plant in the country which would produce EV models such as the iconic i-MiEV.
The news comes as the carmaker starts to plan the market introduction of its first electric car model to the European market. The new plant would be located near to the firm’s EV collaborator, PSA Peugeot Citroen which is headquartered over the border in France.
According to Spanish media sources, the plant, planned for construction in the northwestern Spanish town of Vigo, would require an investment by Mitsubishi of 400 million euros.
Spain’s government has been working hard to encourage the take-up of electric cars as the country is a European leader in the production of clean, solar-generated electricity. The country plans to invest 590 million euros over two years in the development of an electric vehicle market in the hope of seeing 250,000 such vehicles on the roads by 2014.
