An anniversary festival to celebrate the diminutive smart brand went with a bang over the weekend as 1,420 smarts descendent upon Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands on Saturday (September 4).
Celebrating ten years retailing in the UK, Mercedes’ small car brand put on a show to commemorate the occasion. Featuring an opportunity to test drive the all-electric version of a smart fortwo, attendees and their smart vehicles were also treated to a guest appearance from Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton. Lewis was on hand to present awards to the winning smart owners in the ‘Most Modified’, ‘Best Kept’ and ‘Best Dressed’ smart competitions.
The single biggest gathering of the brand’s cars, the festival provided a rare glimpse of the electric fortwo model, currently being trialled in the UK and due to be released in 2012. The electric car uses lithium ion battery technology and can be charged via a standard 13 amp socket to provide zero emission driving.
The carmaker is also known for currently producing the lowest CO2-emitting diesel car available in the UK. The smart fortwo CDi emits just 86g/km of CO2 and achieves an amazing 85.6mpg on a combined cycle.
