The newly-independent and re-launched Saab has announced that it is to launch a joint venture to develop electric and hybrid drivetrains.
The new company will be jointly owned with American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) and will be based in Trollhättan-also home to Saab’s headquarters. The new firm-called e-AAM- will first develop and market an innovative electric all-wheel drive system in a full service package.
This new system can be easily integrated into existing platforms, minimising vehicle architecture changes. The Swedish carmaker will become a client of e-AAM Driveline Systems, purchasing components to be used in next-generation Saab vehicles from 2012. The new company also aims to market its expertise and advanced products to other car manufacturers.
Saab is also set to reveal its first electric concept vehicle since it was sold by the US car giant GM at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show. On show to the public from October 2, 2010, the 9-3 ePower electric family estate car has a range of 124 miles and a top speed of 93mph.
Announcing the formation of e-AAM Driveline Systems, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said: "For Saab, the announcement of this partnership is a major step towards a successful future as an independent company. Saab is currently class-leading with its innovative Cross Wheel Drive system (XWD). The new, electric, all-wheel-drive system will secure us a leadership position in our next generation Saabs. This joint venture will bring together Saab’s world-class vehicle engineering expertise and AAM’s extensive engineering, production and marketing capabilities – a powerful combination."
The joint venture will commence operations next week (as of October 1, 2010).
