News in brief: Electric vehicles for hire

You may soon be able to use an electric vehicle on your driving holidays, after car hire firm Avis placed a pre-order for 500 electric vehicles from Renault.

The two companies formed an Electric Vehicle partnership back in February and now Avis plans to make the Renault Fluence ZE and the Renault Kangoo Express ZE available in seven countries by the end of 2011. The electric vehicle hire will be possible in the UK, as well as in France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Portugal.

The Renault Kangoo ZE is a light commercial vehicle; while the Renault Fluence ZE is a family saloon car. Renault also plans to add two further electric cars to its range in the form of the Renault Twizy, a city car with two seats and four wheels; and the Renault ZOE, a compact hatchback suitable for everyday use.
