The vehicle features the IMA system used in the Insight Hybrid and the 1.3litre i-VTEC engine that also features in its hybrid sibling. It is capable of running on the electric motor alone under some medium- and low-speed conditions.

Its powertrain includes the engine and CVT, as well as the IMA system that features a 10kW electric motor with 92Nm of torque and a compact intelligent power unit with a 5.75Ah, 100.8V NiMH battery pack, a power control unit, and a motor electric control unit. Under the Japan 10-15 cycle it achieves fuel economy of 70.6mpg.

In addition, the vehicle comes with Eco Assist, helping drivers achieve even more economical driving.

The vehicle has a strong reputation having achieved cumulative sales at the 1.5million unit mark in its conventional form in Japan by the end of September with global sales of 3.5million. Honda now hopes it will achieve 14,000 units per month of the Fit and Fit Hybrid in Japan.

The Fit Hybrid has gone on sale in Japan for Y1.59million yen meaning it is the most affordable Honda hybrid yet. The Jazz Hybrid meanwhile, will go on sale in some European markets during the early part of 2011.
