Electric vehicles are set to have a serious positive impact on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions we are responsible for.
That’s the verdict of a new report released by Canada-based environmental NGO Pollution Probe which has predicted that electric vehicles could contribute as much as 37 per cent of Toronto’s annual target for greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2030.
Entitled Unlocking the Electric Mobility Potential of Toronto: Moving Toward an Electric Mobility Master Plan for the City, the report is the result of in-depth research and makes a number of recommendations for advancing the deployment of electric vehicle technology in Canada. This included comprehensive simulations of the response of Toronto’s electricity grid to the charging profiles associated with electric vehicle use in the city.
It found that there were significant emission reductions associated with electric vehicle use although the capacity of the grid to cope with the increased demand for power was limited in some regions.
It now suggests a collaborative approach is needed that will involve local stakeholders and many organisations to plan correctly for the introduction of electric vehicles.
