New electric car guide to help customers prepare for EV invasion

A new electric car guide has been published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) to help motorists understand electric vehicles and make informed decisions when purchasing one of these zero tailpipe emission models.

The new ‘Electric Car Guide’ from the industry body is presented in an easy to understand Q&A style format, explaining everything from battery types, charging, vehicle performance, on-the-road cost, government incentives and safety.

A number of electric car models are set to hit the UK market early next year to coincide with the introduction of Government grants worth up £5,000 for buyers of EVs, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell cars. As early as January 2011, electric cars could become the reality of personalised transport for many motorists and as such the society is helping to prepare consumers for these new models.

“Over the past decade, the pace of technological developments in the automotive industry has picked up considerably as vehicle manufacturers focus on increasing the fuel efficiency of their vehicles and cutting CO2 emissions," said Paul Everitt, SMMT’s chief executive.  "Our responsibility is therefore greater than ever to guide motorists through the increasing range of choices they now face.  It is important they understand the benefits they can experience, equipping them with the best information to make the right purchasing decision for their driving needs."

The Electric Car Guide, published by SMMT, can be downloaded for free here.
