Porsche achieves huge fuel economy improvements

Who thought Porsche was all about delivering the fastest and best looking cars? Now the manufacturer is targeting improved fuel economy with each model change too.

According to its statistics, the savings achieved by all currently available models compared to their predecessors lie in the double digit percentage range even though they offer increased performance too.

Fuel consumption reductions range from 20-23 per cent in the new Porsche Cayenne models; while the new generations of the Porsche 911 and Porsche Boxster/Cayman model series, revealed savings of up to 16 and 15 per cent respectively.

The 911 achieves 24mpg with 15 per cent lower CO2 emissions than its predecessor; the Boxster and Cayman models achieve 25mpg; while the two new six-cylinder Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel models slash fuel consumption by as much as 23 per cent with the Cayenne S Hybrid achieving 21mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway.

In the case of the 911 sports cars with naturally aspirated engines, most of the reductions can be attributed to a switch to direct fuel injection, as well as the introduction of a seven-speed instead of the previous five-speed automatic torque converter.

Another factor in the achievement across the Cayenne range is the introduction of an eight-speed automatic transmission with automatic stop/start function and wide gear ratio range. The vehicles also benefit from a weight-optimised material mix and modifications to the overall vehicle concept such as the new active and light four-wheel drive system.
