GE commits to electric vehicles

One of the biggest names in the technology industry has expressed its commitment to electric vehicles.

During a speech in London, General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt stated that the company would order “tens of thousands” of electric vehicles in around a week although he did not specify the total or the supplier.

According to Immelt, half of GE’s sales force of about 45,000 will drive electric vehicles with the company also having a vehicle leasing division as part of its GE Capital finance unit.

The company will invest $10billion over the next five years in clean energy across its business line. This will include power transmission software and smart grid technologies. It also has several important clean energy products in its line-up such as lithium-ion batteries for cars and trucks thanks to a venture with A123Systems.
