Mitsubishi makes power steering breakthrough

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has made a significant breakthrough in the area of electric power steering with the smallest and lightest motor controller yet.

The next-generation model is half in volume and 70 per cent in weight compared to the company’s current products that have equal output.

In addition, Mitsubishi has upgraded steering assistance capabilities to improve output performance of the motor by 30 per cent. It has achieved this by optimising the electromagnetic design and with the employment of the company’s Poki-poki motor that increases coil density. It also features a unique algorithm that enhances steering sensation and stability.

Currently, around 40 per cent of new automobiles are manufactured with electric power steering which can reduce fuel consumption by three-five per cent compared to hydraulic steering.

As a result, manufacturers are looking for motors and controllers that are lighter than current components to further improve fuel efficiency. This is why Mitsubishi Electric is confident of providing the product to manufacturers in the near future.
