New Audi A4 to slash fuel consumption

The best-selling Audi A4 will now be even more economical with two new versions having been launched in Germany.

The saloon car will consume 53.5mpg on average with CO2 emissions of just 115g/km; while the Audi A4 Avant will consume 51.1mpg and have CO2 emissions at 120g/km. This means that emissions have been reduced by four and nine grams respectively.

There is no reduction of power however, with the two-litre TDI engine generating 320Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,500rpm. The saloon version accelerates from 0-62mph in 9.5seconds while the Avant completes the sprint in 9.8seconds. They have top speeds of 134mph and 129mph respectively.

The two new models build on Audi’s modular efficiency platform with gear ratios having been lengthened slightly and aerodynamics tweaked to provide a lower ride height which in turn improves the drag co-efficient. An on-board computer will also provide the driver with tips about fuel efficient driving.

The Audi A4 TDI is on sale starting at €31,600; while the A4 Avant starts at €33,250.
