Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced that the city wide electric vehicle charging network will be launched in spring 2011.
Source London will deliver 1,300 public charging points across the city as it attempts to create a single visual identity for electric driving across the capital. The idea is that members will be able to charge vehicles at any one of the charging points for no more than a £100 annual membership fee.
As the launch moves closer, a new website has been created entitled sourcelondon.net. It provides a consolidated source of information on electric vehicles including charge point locations across the city. Siemens will be the IT and services partner and this will include back-office operation which will oversee the network and a number of functions including members’ registration.
Source London has been developed by Transport for London along with the London boroughs and a number of private sector partners. Other UK cities are now expected to open discussions on developing charge point networks that can be used seamlessly by electric vehicle drivers across the country.
In addition, the Mayor has also confirmed a 100 per cent discount from the congestion charge for electric vehicle drivers in the capital, as well as other low emission vehicles.
