Volkswagen sets huge electric vehicle target

As it bids to firmly establish its presence in the Chinese vehicle market, Volkswagen has revealed plans to sell 10,000 electric vehicles in the country by 2018.

The German car manufacturer will build an electric model at local ventures with SAIC Motor Corporation and FAW Group Corporation in 2013 and will consider a battery powered car designed specifically for the nation in 2018.

Volkswagen was actually the first overseas car maker to enter the Chinese market three decades ago. Now it, along with Nissan, General Motors and Daimler are all planning electric vehicles in the country.

The move comes on the back of local demand for electrics and hybrids with China offering buyers of plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars as much as 60,000 yuan to help cut pollution and oil dependency.
