Israel confirms 2012 electric car plans

Just how quickly will electric cars be available on a large scale? If you live in Israel you only have another year or so to wait.

During a conversation with Globes yesterday, Israel Corporation CEO Gilad Nir commented that electric cars, in association with the Better Place venture, were on the fast track to Israel’s highways.

He described Better Place as “an investment in activity that is groundbreaking and will change consumer behaviour”. He believes it is not a trivial activity and instead thinks that Israel has simply spotted a consumer trend quicker than others.

The country began talking about electric cars in 2006 and now every leading global car maker has announced the production of electric cars, according to Mr Nir. In addition, China wants all cars to have electric motors within the coming decades and it is the world’s largest vehicle market.

He then stated that next year in Israel, consumers will begin a wide test and by 2012 there should be full commercial activity.
