The five-door model is powered by an integrated motor assist system with an i-VTEC petrol engine and a DC brushless 10kW electric motor that helps achieve fuel economy of 41mpg. It has the capability of operating exclusively on electric power in certain low- to mid-speed cruising conditions and with a 10.6gallon fuel tank the Insight has a maximum driving range in excess of 400miles.

Also included is the ecological drive assist system that enhances efficient vehicle operation while providing feedback on individual driving styles. This helps drivers improve fuel efficiency by altering vehicle functionality and providing feedback. There is a 3D background within the speedometer that changes colour from green to blue to reflect how efficiently or inefficiently the driver is accelerating or braking.

Standard features across all models include front-side airbags with a passenger-side occupant position detection system; side-curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution; driver and passenger active head restraints; and a front body that is designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries.
