Hertz to introduce Smart Fortwo EVs to rental fleet

The Smart Fortwo electric vehicle will soon be part of one of the biggest rental fleets in the world after an agreement was reached between Smart USA and the Hertz Corporation.

The vehicles will be introduced at car sharing and rent-a-car locations in New York; Washington, DC; and San Francisco, California with the vehicle placements considered part of the Hertz Global EV programme, which will offer 100 per cent electric and plug-in hybrids to customers worldwide.

The Smart Fortwo electric drive is powered by a 30kW drive magneto-electric motor and a 16.5kWh lithium-ion battery. It uses a 220V outlet and takes three and a half hours to charge the battery from 20-80 per cent; with less than eight hours needed for a full charge.

Smart USA has decided to strategically deploy a fleet of vehicles across the US targeting early adopters of the electric drive technology who are interested in making a passionate statement on environmental awareness.

Furthermore, Hertz will team up with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide to bring the Hertz Global EV to key hotels in North America – its portfolio includes the Element Hotels, Aloft Hotels and Four Points.
