Mitsubishi the latest to expand into Thailand

Mitsubishi has become the latest big name automaker to move into Thailand after agreeing on a joint study for fleet testing of electric vehicles in the country.

The company will begin initiatives ahead of the future market introduction of the i-MiEV electric vehicle, while the Thai government is expected to move forward with its Electric Vehicle Project to create an organisation with related ministries and government agencies under the direction of the Ministry of Industry.

Thailand has been working towards the advancement of electric vehicles with plans to expand the Thailand automobile industry. However, it is only through this project with Mitsubishi that it is looking into specific testing for the popularisation of electric vehicles through the use of the i-MiEV.

At the moment the i-MiEV is sold in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia as well as several European markets with Mitsubishi collaborating on initiatives to promote electric vehicles in Monaco, Iceland, Denmark and Singapore.

In addition, Mitsubishi conducted a Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for a third factory of its Thailand producer and distributor, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand. The third factory will start mass production in March, 2012.
