Megacities to fuel need for green cars

A forecast from Frost & Sullivan is predicting that 4.5billion people globally will be living in cities by 2025 – fuelling the need for the right mobility solutions.

Its report, entitled “Impact of Urbanisation and Development of Megacities on Mobility and Vehicle Technology Planning” outlines that around 60 per cent of the world’s total population will be living in cities within 15 years with around 30 so-called “megacities” forming with a total population exceeding 10million – currently, there are 22 megacities globally.

Analysts suggest that the megacities will develop as a result of an “uncontrolled urban sprawl” with cities expanding their boundaries by merging with two or more closely located suburban towns and cities. This, it suggests, will create significant challenges, particularly relating to public transportation.

With high population densities in cities currently, there has been significant congestion and in some cases the rampant urban development had led to extreme poverty with unregulated property markets and insufficient housing development.

Frost & Sullivan is predicting that mobility integrators will collaborate with various transport providers and facilitators to provide real-time solutions for customers.

It hopes that customers will be able to get all information related to travel and schedule it at a click of a button and in the long run vehicle manufacturers will partner with these mobility integrators similar to how Peugeot is offering cars, scooters and bicycles on a rental basis through its agent networks and company dealerships.
