Japanese car maker Suzuki has revealed plans for an all-new engine that will make its mini cars more efficient than ever.
It will be the first time a new engine has been introduced in its mini-cars for around 16 years and the 600cc model is expected to deliver fuel efficiency in the region of 63.5mpg when combined with a start-stop system – that’s a fuel economy improvement of around 20 per cent compared to the existing model.
The report, in business daily The Nikkei, suggests that Suzuki’s mini cars will be able to achieve a fuel economy comparable to those in the Daihatsu Move, which hit the market last month.
The first vehicle to feature the engine will be the new MR Wagon, which should be launched later this month. However, all future versions of the company’s mini-cars, including the Wagon R and Alto, will be powered by the engine with Suzuki planning to invest a total of 20billion yen over three years to retool its Sagara factory in Shizuoka Prefecture to make the new engine.
