Hybrid Prius beats 20 year-old sales record

The Toyota Prius became the best selling car of 2010 in Japan, beating its sibling rival, the Corolla, which had held the top spot for more than 20 years.

A growing interest in reducing CO2 emissions and cutting fuel consumption has helped the Prius, the carmaker’s original hybrid model, increase sales over the years since it was first launched in 2000.

According to news agency Headlineauto, the Prius also passed another Corolla record by selling 315,000 units last year beating the previous annual best of 300,000 models set in 1990.

Sales of the hybrid saloon model were further boosted during 2010 by the Japan’s government subsidies and tax incentives for environmentally friendly cars.
