We’ve been talking about it for about a month now (see article) but finally at the North American International Auto Show, Chevrolet displayed its new subcompact vehicle known as Sonic.
The Chevrolet Sonic, known as the Aveo elsewhere in the world, will be offered in both four- and five-door variants with both a standard Ecotec 1.8litre engine and an Ecotec 1.4litre turbo engine available.
The 1.4litre turbo’s power ratings are estimated at 200Nm of torque between 1,850rpm and 4,900rpm with fuel economy figures yet to be revealed. It is believed that the wide rpm range for the maximum torque will help the engine to deliver a better driving experience and performance.
Its key features include a low-mass hollow-frame cast iron block; chain-driven cams; piston-cooling jets; a variable flow oil pump; and an electronically controlled thermostat. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold which helps to reduce weight and offer greater packaging flexibility in smaller vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Ecotec 1.8litre engine will include many of the same features of the 1.4litre Ecotec turbo. It too will be compact and durable and its two-stage variable intake means it can reach 90 per cent peak torque from 2,400rpm-6,500rpm.
In addition, all models will include a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and a stabiliser bar; as well as electronic power steering; and a wear compensator that adjusts system interaction with the steering gear to ensure a precise steering action.
