Japan is expected to further its environmental push after the Nikkei revealed the government will adopt energy efficiency standards for industrial motors as early as fiscal 2012.
The standards will apply to a range of products expected to include pumps, home appliances and air conditioners.
According to the report, the US and Europe currently have the edge on energy efficiency standards including mileage targets for cars. As such the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is looking to put together specific measures including goals for each motor type and timelines to reach the necessary targets.
Around one trillion yen will be poured into implementing the new standards with the business daily predicting a backlash from motor makers, who will shoulder the costs, and the entire manufacturing sector which won’t want to pass on higher prices to consumers.
